You've heard of WYSIWIG?  It is an acronym that means What You See Is What You Get.  It usually is used when talking about computerized fonts.  Sometimes fonts are "translated" by the printer and don't print exactly as they appeared on the computer.  Others are printed exactly the same.

In this case, it applies to the paucity of information found on this marriage document.  Names of bride and groom, they lived in Franklin NH, date of marriage and officiant.  Nothing about the family on the back (so I didn't even include that side).  No information on the front.  It is very disappointing, to say the least.  You can't get any new information other than the day and month of the wedding, and proof that they were, indeed, married.

Harvey Scott Part 2 Census 1850-1853

Harvey Scott Census Salisbury, Merrimack NH

  • 1850 Census, Salisbury, Merrimack NH
  • 1853 Franklin Pierce becomes President

1850 Census age 24

Harvey Scott in 1850 NH Census
with Lucretia Scott

Here is a new document for me, I just found because I was researching for this particular blog.  I have to be careful with my assumptions.  Harvey is indexed as Henry age 24, born about 1826.  He works as a Mason with three other men, David Scott who might be his father, age 52; Marshall Scott age 18; Philo Scott age 26; then Lucretia age 22, all are born in Vermont.  They apparently share a house with a Tailor Alvin Quinly and his wife Ednah A.  You can tell by the numbers preceding their names.  They all live in dwelling 104, and the separate families are enumerated.

So, the question I must research is, is this David his father?  The age is correct.  I don't recall seeing the occupation of Mason in Harvey's repertoire before, but that isn't unheard of.  Why did Lucretia move in with Harvey 10 years later?

Although this is about Harvey, I have to include here that I searched for Lucretia and found a tantalizing death certificate. I was very close to loving it until I compared the birth date.  It was about 10 years off.  Must always compare everything, because a wrong document in one place can screw things up in a lot of other places.  ESPECIALLY when searching for common names.

Harvey Scott 1826-1865 Part 1, the early years

Harvey Scott 1826-1865, is Norm's Great, Great Grandfather.  He lived through the Civil War, died just before it ended that same year.  He fought for the Union, which does NOT automatically make him a racist.

1826, Harvey Scott is born

I've not been able to find out anything about his parents, so as far as I can tell, this is as far back as his pedigree goes.
The first photographs, Joseph-Nicéphore Niépce succeeded in recording a light-sensitive image with silver chloride. His partial success was strengthened by his ongoing research into fixing the picture with a kind of asphalt. It was in 1826 that he was able to put a view of his workshop onto a pewter plate.  -- The People History

1828, sister Lucretia Scott is born

While I know she is born in this year, it is only because of the census records so far.  I still know nothing about her parents.
Democratic Party Created, A faction breaks off from the older established Democratic-Republican Party to become the Democratic Party. In the 1828 Presidential Elections opponents of Andrew Jackson told all who would listen that Andrew Jackson was a "Stubborn Jackass" Jackson was proud of his reputation for stubbornness and even wanted to use it as a good quality, so started using a donkey on his campaign posters . Democrats have been using the symbol of the Donkey ever since.  -- The People History

1829 Andrew Jackson is elected the seventh President of the United States

I don't [yet] have any record of his childhood and young adult life.  I can make some assumptions.  If David is his father, he taught him how to be a mason, to lay bricks.  Some things that happened in these two decades are as follows:
Michigan Became the 26th state, Michigan became the 26th state in The United States on January 26th , 1837. -- The People History
Wagon Trains Start The Journey To California, Covered Wagon Trains took immigrants on a journey from Missouri River towns to what is now the state of California. The trip was about 2,000 miles and each night the Covered Wagon Train would form a circle for shelter from wind and extreme weather, they would put all the animals in the center to prevent them from running away or being stolen by Native Americans. -- The People History
Massachusetts Child Employment Laws, Massachusetts became the first state to pass laws limiting how many hours a child laborer could be forced to work. The new laws limited a child under the age of twelve's workday to a maximum of 10 hrs. -- The People History
In this time, six men became President of the United States:  Martin Van Buren; William Henry Harrison; John Tyler; James Knox Polk; Zachary Taylor; Millard Fillmore.

Next up:  Harvey Scott, 1850s or so, I may change my mind about the title.

Below is information from Ancestry.com's Historical Insights: Establishment of County Poorhouses
I thought it was relevant because I think several of the Scott people were in either poor houses, or placed their children in orphanages because they were unable to properly care for them.

One observer noted that many people, “sought to die in starvation rather than
submit to what they regarded as the shame attending
their admission into almshouses.” 1876, Binghamton, New York.

HISTORICAL INSIGHTSEstablishment of County Poorhouses

Establishment of County Poorhouses

“Going to the poorhouse” was not just a fear for many 19th-century Americans, it was a reality.
America was not the land of milk and honey for everyone during the Industrial Revolution. Countless thousands of people were forced into poverty and homelessness. Such unfortunates could even be sold at public auction to provide labor in exchange for room and board, a system called “outdoor relief.” Often, homeless Americans suffered from mental illnesses or disabilities that prevented them from working. With no public support, they relied on charity. Officials hoped that the creation of a tax-supported poorhouse, also known as almshouses or “poor farms,” would be a more humane—and cheaper—alternative. Most New England towns had at least one poorhouse, while cities such as Boston had several. The Massachusetts state almshouse sheltered almost one thousand people. One report found that the residences “are not at present well adapted to modern ideas of comfort and convenience,” and reports of meager food and conditions were not uncommon.

Wednesday's Child -- Clarence Anthony Scott 1927-1927

I found Norman F. Scott's older sibling.  When we looked at NFS birth certificate, we noted that he was the second child born to this couple.  I found him.

He is Clarence Anthony Scott, and he was born 24 May 1927 in Franklin NH.  They were living on 23 Spring street at the time of his death, two and a half months later.

I couldn't find a birth certificate, nor even birth record online, but I did find his death certificate.

Whenever you see a record like this, be sure to advance one to check the backside of the record.  Sometimes there is valuable information there, too.  One other example I can think of is the WWI Draft cards.  Be sure to check the backs.

Was he a sickly child?  Did the new parents not know how to be parents?  His mother Cecelia was only 18 when her first-born died.

Mystery Monday -- Norman F. Scott Sr 1928-2007

Norman F. Scott Sr with
grandson Joshua Scott age 6 months
1982 taken by J'Anette

Once in 2004 I asked my father in law, Norman F. Scott Sr if he had any photographs of himself as a young man, in the 1940s or 1950s.  These are the earliest photos I have of him.

Looks here like he enjoys his grandson, doesn't it?  Oh, I found one more early photo, 1950s.

Following is what I wrote to him --
I was wondering if you had a photograph of you as a young man?  I would like to include a picture of you at about the age you were when you met Shirley in my history.

Also, would you be able to tell me a little bit about how you met her?  I understand you met in Union Station?  Where were you going?  What did you think?  What did you first talk about?

In retrospect, I probably should have tried to talk to him in person, and now it is too late.

I wrote that there was an obituary for him that I had a hard time accessing.  I found it -- sort of.  The Tacoma News Tribune has the following information.

News Tribune, The (Tacoma, WA) - Friday, May 18, 2007

SCOTT Norman F.

I sent an email to the Tacoma News Tribune asking if this is all there is.  I've never found ANY obituary for this man.  I begin to think they never published one.

Census Sunday -- Norman Scott Sr 1940 Census

This is the 1940 census for Norman Frederick Scott.  You'll find him on line 71.  He is 11 years old, and living in St Peter's Orphanage on the corner of Alsace and Kelley streets in Manchester NH. The truly sad part about this is that he was not really an orphan.  The story is that he was put in and out of the orphanage when things got tight for the Scott family.  At one time he lived with his Uncle Fred Adams in Franklin.  That will be another story to tell in another post.

Nope, his parents are still alive at this point in time.  Where are they?  I have yet to find his mother Cecelia in 1940, nor his father Chester.  I have scanned the census for the entire orphanage and found no other Scott children.  So, where did the girls go?  Did they stay with their parents?  Were they farmed out to relatives?  I can find neither hide nor hair of his little sisters Dorothy and Yvonne.

St Peter's Orphanage, Franklin NH

This census really makes me both sad and mad.  Mad because his family couldn't keep him, and sad because of the same reason.  What does that do to a child's psyche to be put away when they couldn't afford to keep him?  And, again, were his extended family also in a tight bind where they couldn't band together to keep the family together?

I got the impression NFS Sr did not like to talk about his childhood.

Census Sunday --- NFS Sr 1930 Census

Little Norman in his first Census.  He was about 2 years old, and his little sister Dorothy was just a few months old.  I wonder what happened to that first child.  I wrote in the last blog about NFS birth certificate, and that he is the second child born to Cecelia.

He lives with parents Chester and Cecelia at 538 Central Street, Franklin NH.  This is a rented house.  I looked through the neighbors on this sheet, and I don't see anybody who may be related.  It seems they were on their own, here.

Above and below are the map view, from Google Maps 2017, and of the streetview image captured November 2015 from Google Maps.  You can see where the house might have been, but it doesn't look like it is there anymore.  Point of research -- see if there are historical photos of this house, and any record of when it was torn down and why.

That's about par for the course as far as the Scott family goes.  It seems as if all record gets wiped off the face of the earth.  If we are related, please feel free to contact me, I'd love to chat.  Subscribe to catch every morsel posted.
