This record confirms dates and places of birth for both Morrill and Adella.  We also find that Morrill is an Operative in the town of Franklin.  Adella probably did not work outside the home.

President Garfield served from March of 1881 until he was assassinated six and a half months later.  He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting HOuse member to gain the White House (Wikipedia -- Garfield, 2018).

Birth

Adella Grace Scott was born in Salisbury, Merrimack County NH.  Below is her birth certificate.  The frustrating thing about New Hampshire vital records is that they rarely filled in anything more than the absolute necessities.  But at least it provides evidence of her date and place of birth, her father's name and place of birth, and her mother's maiden name.

19 July 1860, age 4 months, living with her parents, older brother Marshall, and her father's sister, Aunt Lucretia M. Scott.  They all lived in Salisbury NH.  This image is the second part, since Harvey's name starts on the previous page.  You can find the entire thing in a previous post.

Father Harvey Scott died, 30 January 1865 in Hampton Virginia at the age of 39.  You can find my research on his death here.  She was only 4 years old, but her father was gone fighting in the Civil War for much of her life.  How much did she know about him, or remember about him?  What was life like before he died, and how much did their life change afterwards?  She had an older brother and a younger sister.  Harvey had purchased a couple pieces of land before he died, I think the family lived and farmed there.

Mother marries second husband Amos L. Hamm II on 1 May 1868 at Franklin NH.  You can find my blog on this event here.  I still don't have much primary evidence on this event, and I still wonder how they met?  I surmise that, since Amos also fought in the Civil War, that Amos knew this family from that connection.  Or, perhaps it was because they lived in the same geographical area.  Amos had lost his wife, and had a daughter a couple of years older than Adella, so perhaps it was a marriage of convenience?  Hard to say.  You can find the first of my blogs on Amos Hamm here.  His life was pretty amazing.

They lived in Salisbury, Merrimack, New Hampshire per Census.  She was 28 years old, her husband Harvey was 33.  Children Marshall was 3 years old and Adela G. was 4 months old.  Also living with them is Harvey's sister Lucretia M. Scott, age 31 years old.  It doesn't look like she ever married.  We will try to find out in another blog.

Mary Jane Bacon married Amos L Ham in Salisbury, New Hampshire, in 1866 when she was 34 years old.  I don't have primary sources for this marriage, yet.  But she had young children, and it was pretty important to have a husband as a partner.  Wonder how they met?  He had also been married before, had a daughter the same age as Marshall.

Harvey Scott.  Widow Mary J. Scott.  Curiously, B.E. Badger is written in the "minor" line and is listed as "Gd'n" which, according to Ancestry, the abbreviation "Gdn" means guardian.  Not sure who was guardian for whom.
On an Ancestry Message Board, the abbreviation as it is listed here might mean that Badger is the guardian or decision-maker for Mary Bacon Scott.

On the lower half is some information I should be able to use later on.  1865, April 22, the Widow Mary J. Scott made an application 90531, certificate 99380.

On 1868, October 23, on the Minor line, is application 166.981, certificate 122.800 -- did Badger make another application for Mary?  or what?  He had three children, Marshall born 1856, Adella born 1860, and Silia born 1862.

My thoughts about this document:  It looks well preserved, but I'm looking at photos of scans of photos -- you get the idea.  The writer who filled this document out has wonderful handwriting, and it looks like Spencerian penmanship.  You can get the similar books and improve your own handwriting!

In the proof of death, we find the connection between Phthisis and consumption, another term for pulmonary tuberculosis.  Also we notice that this disease is spelled differently.  We also find written down how he contracted this, and that it was in the line of duty.

We find a secondary proof of marriage date.  It is secondary, in that it isn't the original marriage document, but the writer looked at and obtained the date from that primary source.

We have the exact dates of birth for each of the children.  The third child I've always seen spelled as Silla.  This may have been an error in deciphering Spencerian handwriting, but it is Lilla.

We find that Harvey Scott was a loyal soldier.

And, finally, we find the name B.E. Badger again.  He seems to have acted as Mary Jane's liason, helping her with the government forms, endless forms.  Did he act free of charge?  Or did he charge a commission to help families out?  Perhaps this is a subject for another search, when I run out of ideas.

These three documents are simply the same deed naming Harvey Scott.  I haven't looked closely at them to say what they are right away, so we will explore it together.  Let's get started, shall we?  I got the copy of the deed in my hand in April of 1987.

Greenough of Salisbury in the county of Merrimack and state of New Hampshire and Elisabeth, wife of the said Elbridge for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars to us in hand, before the delivery hereof, well and truly paid by Harvey Scott of the county of Merrimack aforesaid, the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge, have granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents do give, grant, bargain, sell, alien, enscoss, convey and confirm unto the said Harvey Scott his heirs and assigns forever, A certain tract of land situated in Salisbury aforesaid, founded & described as follows to wit --, commencing on the South Road so called in said Salisbury at the south easterly corner of land to Ezekiel Woodard, thence running northerly on said Woodard land twenty eight rods to a stake? & stands thence easterly eight rods to a stake & stones, thence southerly twenty rods to the south road, thence by said road eight rods to the bound first mentioned being the same land conveyed to me by James H. Heath? & wife by deed dated August 4, 1839 with the buildings thereon.

To have and to hold the said granted premises, with all the privileges and appurtenances to the same belonging to him the said Harvey Scott and his heirs and assigns, for his and their only proper use and benefit forever.  And I the said Elbridge F. Greenough and my heirs, executors and administrators, do hereby covenant, grant, and agree to and with the said Harvey Scott and his heirs and assigns, that until the delivery hereof, I am the lawful owners of the said premises, and am seized and possessed therof in my own right in fee simple: and have full power and lawful authroity to grant and convey the same manner aforesaid; that the said premises are free and clear from all and every incumbrance whatsoever; and that I and my heirs, executors and administrators, shall and will warrant and defend the same to the said Harvey Scott and his hairs and assigns, aganst the lawful claims and demands of any person or persons whomsoever.  And I Elisabeth Greenough wife of the said Elbridge in consideration aforesaid, do hereby relinquish my right of dower in the before mentioned premises.  

And we each of us do hereby release, discharge and waive all such rights of exemption from attachment and levy or sale on [illegible] other rits whatsoever, in said premises and in each and every part thereof as our family homestead, as are reserved or secured to us or either of us by the Statute of the State of New Hampshire, penned July 4th, 1861, entitled "An Act to exempt the homestead of families from attachment and levy or sale on execution" or by any other statute or Statutes of said State.

State of New Hampshire, March 13, 1860.  Personally Appearing the above named Elbridge F. Greenough acknowleged the foregoing instrument to be their voluntary act and deed before me [undated] signed J.K. Clement.

This is what the whole document looks like.  Now you can see why I cut out the middle man, right?  So, to translate the deed, it looks like Elbridge and Elisabeth Greenough sold their property which is described by using a landmark and walking around the perimeter of the land pointing out the corners at Woodard's place, and then two Stakes and Stones as markers.  Did it say how many acres this was?  I don't think so.  As far as I can tell, it is about 28 rods on one side, about 462 feet on that side. This looks to be just under 5 acres.  But he paid 200 dollars, which is more than $5,000 as of 2014.

Virginia during the Civil War

Its location and industry made Virginia key to both the Union and the Confederacy during the American Civil War.

Virginia’s role in the American Civil War cannot be underestimated. The state was home to Richmond, the Confederate capital: a symbol of pride for the South and a symbol of resistance and treason to the North. The state was also a center of industry, agriculture, and transportation, making it a rich target for Union forces and a desperately needed resource for the South. Virginia’s rivers, valleys, and mountains were the scenes of several important military actions at Chancellorsville, Manassas, and, finally, the surrender at Appomattox. 155,000 Virginians served the Confederacy, including raw recruits from the Virginia Military Institute and Emory and Henry College, who formed their own units such as the Richmond Howitzers and the Stonewall Brigade. The state also provided the Confederacy with some of its greatest military leaders, including General Robert E. Lee, Lt. General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Major General J.E.B. Stuart, Lt. General A.P Hill, and General Joseph E. Johnston.
