This decade has very little documentation about her life. I will, therefore, provide some flavour of the world events, and presidents who impacted American life, and which she most definitely read and heard about.

1897 William McKinley becomes the 25th President of the United States

William McKinley becomes the 25th President of the United States from 4 March 1897 until his assassination six months into his second term. He was the last president to have served in the Civil War, and the only one to have started that war as an enlisted soldier (Wikipedia -- McKinley, 2019).

Adella grace Scott Scribner may have lived near a state-run "poorhouse" and witnessed what it was like to slip into poverty during the 19th century. "Going to the poorhouse" was not just a fear for many 19th-century Americans, it was a reality -- (Ancestry.com, 2019)

This record confirms dates and places of birth for both Morrill and Adella. We also find that Morrill is an Operative in the town of Franklin. Adella probably did not work outside the home.

1881, James A. Garfield elected as the 20th President of the United States

President Garfield served from March of 1881 until he was assassinated six and a half months later. He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting HOuse member to gain the White House (Wikipedia -- Garfield, 2018).

I suspect this is the farming land that Adella inherited? from her first husband. Or, is this land from Amos' family? Or, did they purchase this land together after they were married?

Adella Grace Scott married Morrill D. Scribner in Franklin, Merrimack, NH on 23 December 1876.

He was her neighbor 6 years ago. At this point, Morrill is 21 years old, Adella is 17. Morrill is a farmer in Salisbury while Adella is a teacher in the same town. This is a first marriage for them both. They were married in Franklin Falls, New Hampshire, in the Baptist church

Morrill's parents were Jeremiah and Eliabeth Stevens Scribner. Her parents are listed as Harvey and Mary Jane Bacon Scott. The record is not filled out fully, which is frustrating but is pretty typical, unfortunately.

Birth

Adella Grace Scott was born in Salisbury, Merrimack County NH. Below is her birth certificate. The frustrating thing about New Hampshire vital records is that they rarely filled in anything more than the absolute necessities. But at least it provides evidence of her date and place of birth, her father's name and place of birth, and her mother's maiden name.

19 July 1860, age 4 months, living with her parents, older brother Marshall, and her father's sister, Aunt Lucretia M. Scott. They all lived in Salisbury NH. This image is the second part, since Harvey's name starts on the previous page. You can find the entire thing in a previous post.

Father Harvey Scott died, 30 January 1865 in Hampton Virginia at the age of 39. You can find my research on his death here. She was only 4 years old, but her father was gone fighting in the Civil War for much of her life. How much did she know about him, or remember about him? What was life like before he died, and how much did their life change afterwards? She had an older brother and a younger sister. Harvey had purchased a couple pieces of land before he died, I think the family lived and farmed there.

Mother marries second husband Amos L. Hamm II on 1 May 1868 at Franklin NH. You can find my blog on this event here. I still don't have much primary evidence on this event, and I still wonder how they met? I surmise that, since Amos also fought in the Civil War, that Amos knew this family from that connection. Or, perhaps it was because they lived in the same geographical area. Amos had lost his wife, and had a daughter a couple of years older than Adella, so perhaps it was a marriage of convenience? Hard to say. You can find the first of my blogs on Amos Hamm here. His life was pretty amazing.

Dorothy May Scott Part 6

Dorothy Mae Scott, born 1929, died 1996, New Hampshire.

Part 6, 1980s and 1990s.

1981 age 51

Death of Husband William Percy French Sr, 2 May 1981.

He was 73 years old, and they'd been married for 22 years.

no further activity noted in this decade.

1992 age 62

Death of Father Chester C. Scott, 15 July 1992, Derry, Rockingham NH.

He was 91 years old, and is buried in Franklin Cemetery, Franklin NH. See his Find a Grave memorial here.

1996 age 66

Died 24 March 1996 in Concord, Merrimack NH.

Dorothy was 66 years old. I would like a copy of her death certificate, but NH is extremely stingy with this type of records.

The story Norm Jr. heard when he was a teenager is that she was dying of cancer. She'd called her brother Norm, wanted him to take her pascall of kids, but brother Norm either couldn't or wouldn't take those kids in. Norm Jr always wondered what happened to them, and felt guilty on behalf of his father because they couldn't keep them. That call would have been about 1965. The kids were put into orphanages, is what Norm Jr heard, because by the time Dorothy found she wasn't actually dying, it was too late and the kids were all placed.

Once again, with this family and with this state, I cannot find one ounce of proof for this story. I have no reason to doubt it, since those parts I was able to prove have panned out.

1998

John W. Coons died 21 August 1998, Goffstown, Hillsborough County NH.

Isn't it interesting that John Coons died in Goffstown, same place William French lived.

Unfortunately, I don't have that much information on these people. If you have any information you would like to share, I'd be happy to include this. If you have any corrections -- because, hey, I'm only human.

Footnotes:

John W. Coons seems to have been quite a bit older than Dorothy, may have been a teacher at Tilton School in Franklin NH. There is, at the same school, a James E. Coons who is the headmaster at Tilton School as well as president of Tilton Junior College. Could be his father? Dates found are 1939 directory; 1942 directory; 1947 directory. Also 1952, John Coons living 121 Hanover, suite 31, Manchester NH. Also 1961 John Coons living 142 Central, Manchester NH.

Still have no information on the Dick S. and Mary L. Scott Bell who supposedly adopted Dorothy. I suspect Mary could be an aunt? It would be on Chester's side.

I found two addresses I've not included in this blog because they seem like anomolies. They are 68 Boyd Street, Newark NJ, and 1 Branch Brook Plaza, Apartment 2, Newark NJ. I don't know.

During a Soviet-American nuclear standoff in October 1962, the nation held its breath as the world teetered on the brink of total annihilation. U.S. spy planes discovered that the Soviets had secretly delivered nuclear missiles to Cuba, located just 90 miles off Florida’s coast. U.S. President John F. Kennedy responded by establishing a blockade to prevent the delivery of more nuclear warheads and on October 22, he went public with the unfolding crisis, announcing the startling discovery of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). Americans immediately prepared for their impending doom, struck with fear after the President’s announcement. During the 13-day stalemate known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev battled it out for the Earth’s future.
