Adella Grace Scott Scribner Part 7 of 9, 1920s

Adella Grace Scott Scribner 1920s

1920

1920 Census, Franklin Ward 3, Merrimack NH;  Farm on East High Street

We can see here that she lives on what looks like 19 East High Street.  It may be a farm, because Albert is listed as working the farm on his own account.  She is widowed, with her daughter Gertrude and son-in-law Albert Manuel living with them.  While the address looks like 19 East High Street, it could be 17, still.  Or the enumerator wrote 17 first, then over-wrote it as 19.

I nearly missed it until I looked closely.  Her neice Gladys Mitchell is also living with them.  I don't know who this is.  Could it be a sister's child?  Or her brother's married daughter?  I honestly don't know.

Now that I look at the next family, Ernest and Jennie Elliott, who look like they live at 17 East High street, I wonder if Adella let out half of the property?  Because sometimes the address is 17 and sometimes it is 19.  But, we will look at the maps from Google Maps, it is really the same property.

17 East High street, Franklin NH

Here we see that nephews Arthur, Leon and Leslie all live on Smith Hill, all served in the US Army.  Sister-in-law Emma lives in the same place.  Son Charles has promoted up to chief clerk at the Sulloway hosiery mill.  I am not sure of Edward Scott, Weston Scott, Mary Scribner.  Gertrude is probably listed under her married name Manuel.

1921

1921-1924 Warren G. Harding becomes the 29th President of the United States.

Republican President from 1921 until his death 1923
"At that time, he was one of the most popular US Presidents,
but the subsequent exposure of scandals that took place under his administration,
and an affair eroded his popular regard.  Harding is often rated among the worst US Presidents.

1922

Residence Franklin NH.  Ancestry's index has her living in Concord NH, but Franklin is part of that Concord directory, so watch what you include in your genealogy.  I've often had to correct the information.  I double check to make sure.  See at the top of the page?  It specifically says Franklin City Directory, so I am comfortable changing that information to reflect reality.

1922 Franklin Directory, same information,
only listed as 19 East High Street

Today, the property has been rebuilt in 2000 as a single family home.  I think they rebuilt it on the same foundation.  No, I didn't include photos, because it doesn't apply, here.  You can search for it on Google, where you will find some realty listings giving you more detail.

1924, age

Residence Franklin NH.  Same song, another verse, another year.  I failed to crop and mark up this one, but you get the idea.  Same cast of characters, but with some new information here.  Adella's nephew Arthur Scott is a farmer on Smith Hill Road, with his brother Chester boarding there working as a farm hand, and his mother Emma living with them.  Adella's nephews Leon Scott is a mill operative and boarding on Spring street, and Leslie is employed at I.P. company, renting rooms on Prospect street.  They apparently do not have wives at this time.  I am still unfamiliar with Edward Scott and Weston Scott.  Son Charles and Sadie Scribner is an office manager the hosiery manufacturer, Sulloway Mill.  Don't know nuthin' 'bout Mary E. Scribner.

1925

1925-1928 -- Calvin Coolidge becomes the 30th President of the United States.

Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States
Republican, he was the Massachusetts governor, Vice President,
becoming president with the death of Warren G. Harding in 1923.
Elected in his own right in 1924.
Said very little, although he had a rather dry sense of humor
(Wikipedia -- Coolidge, 2018).

President Calvin Coolidge Quote:  "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.  Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.  Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.  Education wil not:  the world is full of educated derelicts.  Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent" -- Calvin Coolidge (Coolidge, 2018).

Historical Insight -- Charles Lindbergh's Solo Atlantic Crossing

Adella Scott Scribner was living in Franklin NH when Charles Lindbergh visited Concord NH after becoming the first man to make a solo flight across the Atlantic

Charles Lindbergh's effort to become the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927 was far from a one-man endeavor.  Lindbergh's quest to earn the $25,000 Orteig Prize was supported by St. Louis investors, and his monoplane, The Spirit of St. Louis, was built in San Diego, California.  On May 20, the 25-year-old Lindbergh took off from Long Island's Roosevelt Field in Garden City, New York, where itizens and journalists gathered to watch his departure.  About 33 hours later Lindbergh landed safely near Paris, France, as a crowd of at least 100,000 people greeted him.  A journalist described the pandemonium as "Lucky Lindy" landed in France:  "Soldiers and police tried for one small moment to stem the tide, then they joined it, rushing as madly as anyone else toward the aviator and his plane."  Lindbergh became an instant international hero, and he went on a 92-city tour across the United States (Ancestry Historical Insights, 2019).

1929 age

Residence Franklin NH.  A few new characters show up.  Bernard Scribner is Adella's grandson (Charles' son), living with his parents Charles and Sadie.  Nephew Arthur has a wife Ada.  Nephew Chester and wife Celia; I don't know Edward.  Sister in law Emma on Smith Hill, where are the others?  Nephew Leslie Scott and his wife Ruth.  Don't know about Weston.  Again, we have son Charles and Sadie living on Orchard.  Strange how they names are not exactly alphabetical, and with Charles listed twice with occupation as accountant, and again as office manager of Sulloway mill.

President Herbert Hoover Quote:  "There is no employing class, no working class, no farming class.  You may pigeonhole a man or woman as a farmer or a worker or a professional man or an employer or even a banker.  But the son of the farmer will be a doctor or a worker or even a banker, and his daughter a teacher.  The son of a worker will be an imployer -- or maybe president" -- Herbert Hoover (Hoover, 2018).
